Registering Your UAE Marriage as an Indian Expat
India has the largest expat community in the UAE — over 3.5 million Indian nationals call the UAE home. If you are an Indian national who married in the UAE, you may need to register your marriage with Indian authorities for various official purposes including passport updates, visa applications, and legal proceedings.
This guide explains your options and the step-by-step process.
Note: Indian marriage registration laws vary by religion (Hindu Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, Christian Marriage Act, etc.). Requirements also change. Always verify current procedures with the Indian Consulate General in Dubai or the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi before proceeding.
Do Indian Nationals Have to Register Overseas Marriages?
India does not have a single mandatory overseas marriage registration law — unlike Pakistan's NADRA requirement. However, you should register your UAE marriage with Indian authorities in any of these situations:
- You need the marriage reflected on your Indian passport
- You are applying for a spouse/dependent visa to India or a third country
- You need the marriage certificate for property, inheritance, or legal matters in India
- You want official recognition of the marriage under Indian law
Which Law Governs Your Marriage?
The applicable Indian law depends on your religion:
- Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain: Hindu Marriage Act, 1955
- Muslims: Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act
- Christians: Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872
- All religions (alternative option): Special Marriage Act, 1954 — a secular option that applies to any couple regardless of religion
For marriages performed abroad, most Indian consulates process registration under the relevant personal law or help couples register under the Special Marriage Act.
Option 1: Register at the Indian Consulate / Embassy in UAE
Indian Consulate General, Dubai

Indian Embassy, Abu Dhabi

Process
Book an appointment through the consulate's online portal for marriage registration / attestation services.
Prepare documents:
- UAE marriage certificate (attested by MOJ and UAE MOFA)
- Both parties' Indian passports
- Both parties' Aadhar cards (if available)
- UAE residence visa copies
- Passport photographs
- Marriage registration application form (available on consulate website)
- Court fee (check current rates)
Attend appointment. The consulate officer will review documents, record the marriage, and issue a consular marriage certificate or attest your UAE marriage certificate.
Receive confirmation. Processing time is typically 1–4 weeks depending on the consulate's workload.
Option 2: Register in India
If you are visiting India, you can register your overseas marriage at the Sub-Registrar's office in the district where either spouse resides. You will need:
- UAE marriage certificate (MOFA attested and apostilled, or embassy attested)
- Certified translation into the relevant regional language
- Aadhar cards, passports, and photographs of both parties
- Two witnesses
Updating Your Indian Passport After Marriage
Once married, you may want to update your name on your Indian passport (if you changed your name) or add your spouse as an annotation. This is done through the Consulate's passport services section separately from marriage registration.
Documents needed for name/status update:
- Marriage certificate (consulate-registered or attested)
- Current passport
- Application form and fee
Hindu Marriage in UAE
For Hindu couples marrying in the UAE, there are no dedicated Hindu temples with marriage registration authority in the UAE (unlike in India). Options are:
- Register through UAE civil court (if both are non-Muslim) or respective embassy
- Have a Hindu ceremony at home or at a function hall, then register with the Indian Consulate under the Hindu Marriage Act
The ceremony itself has no legal standing until registered with an authority — ensure you do not skip the registration step.
